The Cheyenne Philosophy
A
working cattle farm, Cheyenne practices sustainable agricultural
methods. We are trying to harness biological processes rather than
relying on purchased inputs such as fertilisers. Stock are
“time-controlled” grazed which works in harmony with the environment by
applying intense grazing pressure for short periods, followed by a long
recovery time – mimicking nature just like the grazing of large groups
of Wilder-beast in Africa. That has led to almost total recovery of
natural pastures, damaged from past “set” grazing, along with the
significant regeneration of native trees and an abundance of wild
flowers. In the long run, such grazing practices will also reduce
parasite pressure by interrupting their life cycle. As it is, apart
from strategic parasite control, we are well on the way of achieving
our goal of organic
production.
The
whole farm has a state-of-the-art stock-water system, using troughs fed
by polyethylene pipes from a central pumping station – designed by a
water engineer – to allow the frugal use of our most precious
resource.
